Tidings on a Saturday Morning

  • Jun. 20th, 2009 at 2:24 PM
many coffees
I've been rather lazy in updating LJ these days. Firstly, I've been feeling fatigue since stock take ended and don't have the mood to write anything.

I feel like I'm falling sick, for an entire week already. I can't stand those people who go around coughing and sniffing in buses and trains and cinemas. For god's sake people, if you're sick, STAY HOME.

Enjoyed an entire week without seeing the big boss, so the office was relatively carefree. Until big boss came into office this morning and asked me if I had checked the counter's dvd display. Which of course I did. It certainly didn't help that he said, "Really? Are you sure? Anyways, I'm OFF today so I won't say anything. I will say it on Monday.".

Great. Now I am left to stew over the entire weekend over what I've done wrong to warrant such a statement from him. Wtf.

On a different note, people sure do judge you differently on the way you dress. Almost every Saturday afternoon, I would buy wanton noodles from the void deck kopitiam. As I was on a working Saturday today, I was in this pretty frilly top and jeans when I went to buy lunch instead of turning up very unglam looking in my shorts and baggy t-shirt and without makeup. I think the hawkers don't even recognise me. =.=

So, usually, the hawkers would totally ignore and not communicate with me (I had to take the initiative to order my food), today, the hawkers immediately asked me what I wanted and even joked with me. Wtf the second time today. So I guess one should never think that dressing up is pointless, because apparently, even hawkers service you faster and more efficiently when you look pretty.

A Time of Celebrations

  • Feb. 8th, 2009 at 1:30 PM

Chinese New Year isn't over for my family. Not yet. I'm expecting some relatives over this afternoon/ evening? I've woken up to the spewing vacuum cleaner and my parents hasty speed-cleaning preparation for people coming over.

Anyways, this pic was due long ago. One of my breakfasts of cny leftovers.

Mee hoon, satay, fried chicken wings and a cup of tea to wash all those oil down my abused oesophagus.

The past working week flew by me. I've been getting busier and busier and whenever it seems that I may get a breather, things start coming in again. I'd made a few mistakes but managed to quickly fix the problem without the important people knowing any better. Hahaha. I'm such a shithead.

Dad's birthday was a simple dinner out at a void deck tze cha near our home. Meet the birthday boy!

On a random note, I think my memory is failing me! I booked tickets for Doubt yesterday and told my friend that the movie was at Cineleisure when it was actually booked for The Cathay. As a result, we were both so very confused because I know I wouldn't book it at Cineleisure. Fortunately, my friend drove and we hopped to The Cathay and I was right, I DID book it at The Cathay! I wonder what was going through my mind when I was smsing the details over.

Braudy hell. Need to eat gingko nuts!

Casual Poet

  • Jan. 17th, 2009 at 9:31 PM
many coffees
I've known about Casual Poet for some time now, mainly through blogs and recommendations. So today I decided to find the place and sate my curiosity once and for all. I have to admit that the place took me some time to find... even though it was situated in a prime area. When I finally got to Causal Poet, I was more than a little disappointed.

First of all, the place was TOO small! I was expecting it to be more spacious because that's how it looked like on their blog. The shop was narrow and long and not the sort of place that I will turn into a bookshop due to the layout. Products-wise is okay. They have stuff brought in from Hong Kong and Taiwan and even some local prints which is a good thing but I feel that there won't be that many people wanting to buy the books as they're more coffee table books than actual reading materials. This is especially so when their target audience is supposed to be a young crowd - not independent people with lots of disposable income who will buy pretty picture books. Their photography and design books are interesting though. Chances are that people will be more likely to buy their other products like tote bags and vintage journals.

Part bookshop, part cafe. I ordered an iced coffee and it turned out more milk than coffee which sucks totally. [info]alerione seemed to like his iced forest fruit tea however, so it may be that coffee isn't a speciality. Still, $5.50 per cup is a little on the expensive side, Starbucks would have been a great alternative for coffee hangout.

Right, so I have beaten Casual Poet's reputation down like nobody's business but there are good sides to it. I adore the furniture. The tables, and benches and even the nifty red painted windows panes added to a real nice cozy feel. You can feel that the owners do put in a lot of thought and details in the shop because you can spot little messages like this one that was stuck on our table.

Yes, I do realize that there are typo errors. But that's the nicest part of it! ^^ It makes me feel like taking out my mum's old typewriter and doing things like that too.

I thought this was a really good idea for a reusable, cheap coaster. Don't you think so?

In case you're curious about the place, here's how it looks like.

I didn't manage to get shots of the windows because the window seat tables were occupied.

Well, it was nice but I don't think I'll be going back to Casual Poet anytime soon, unless they bring in some new stuff that I REALLY want to get my hands on.

After coffee/ tea, we headed out and I saw this!

OMFG. These RA films are still showing in Singapore?! How rare is that?! I've never watched one of these RA films in a cinema before and I really feel like going to one just to get an experience. But... I is afraid to go alone! LOL Maybe I shall ask my R21 movie buddy along. LOL Somehow I don't think my buddy will want to watch any of these.

I'm rather glad I brought my camera. Because I got something unexpected. And oh, don't you just dig these hand painted posters? I wish we did more of these nowadays!

Aesthetically Pleasing Weekend

coffee
There's nothing better than making yourself a cup of earl gray lavender tea, a few snacks to munch while you read a book that has been long due on your reading list.

This reminds me. My earl gray lavender tea is awesome... and finishing soon. Need to go back to The Cookie Museum to buy more tea! O_O

Inkheart isn't as good as I thought it would be and half the time I was checking how many chapters to go till the end. Some of the characters are just plain aggravating. On the other hand, my main motivation to read it is because the movie will be out soon and the trailer does look promising. Hopefully, Inkheart will make a better movie than a book. That goes to say that I won't be reading the other two books in the trilogy.

Breakfast today was good as well. I heardly ever get to eat wholesome breakfasts nowadays when I'd starting working again. I miss breakfasts! I miss the lazy mornings when I can take my time to be awake and prepare myself some nice aesthetic looking meals to kick start the day.

+3 )
Croissant with ham and tomatoes, Crabtree and Evelyn white chocolate and raspberry cookies, hazelnut-flavored coffee and Neil Gaimen's Coraline (a belated Christmas present from my sister).

Have a cuppa.

How nice. Wish there was a cafe like this in Singapore. I'll go purely for the coffee art!

Bottlegreen

  • Dec. 14th, 2008 at 12:02 PM

Met up with friend yesterday afternoon. Brought me to somewhere I will probably never go by my own initiative.

BOTTLEGREEN!!

It's a place in ulufied Serangoon, restaurant next to a beach. I must say that it was a really nice place to dine, with family, friends or lover! Bottlegreen is actually a type of tree (i.e. the one in the picture) shaped like a bottle. The place had three of these trees imported to Singapore, hence they named the restaurant Bottlegreen. Food is pretty good as well. AND affordable.

We walked on the "beach" and along the cycling track for sometime. People were fishing along the canal. Neat. After that, we went to Serangoon Park to walk. Saw many families setting up tents there. I never knew staying outdoors was an in thing for families to do nowadays. I understand a few here and there but the park was filled with troupes of them.

A sign that amused me to no end. Trees falling? XD

Yesterday was particularly enlightening. I don't think I've ever talked to someone about myself so much before.

Bailey's Irish Cream + Milk

  • Oct. 19th, 2008 at 2:30 AM

deviousandrogyny: Har? They charged me $2 for the milk?

Friend 1: The girl did mention the $2 when you were ordering it...

deviousandrogyny: Is it?! Then how about Bailey's with coffee?

Friend 2: It's $13.80.

deviousandrogyny: So, coffee is cheaper than milk...

Friend 2: Yeah, milk is expensive now. Especially without all the milk from China.

Yikes. But at least now I know that there's another alcoholic drink that I can tolerate and even like, even though it tastes a bit like iced Holicks. The list so far:

1. Bailey's Irish Cream with milk
2. Apricot Brandy

I think if I'll try the coffee one next time but I get a feeling I won't like it as much as the milk! XD

More Food...

  • Sep. 2nd, 2008 at 2:23 PM

A little late but RMK is in Singapore! For those who don't recognise the brand, RMK is the Japanese version of Chanel. It was briefly made available in Singapore many years ago until they closed their counter in Shaw Isetan. It has reopened their counter there again and I believe it's going to do much better now than before.

And because I can, a picture to show that I saw the less than spectacular fireworks on the 22nd and 23rd August.

Breakfast Pics )

Ate at this place at Takashimaya. Food was not bad but too much fried food makes eating the entire meal a bit difficult.

Romankan )
After class, I went to this small eatery at Sunshine Plaza (?) in Bugis.

Lasagne )
Oh. I went to the supermarket with mum and dad too.

I like the vege stands most! )

Random Things

  • Aug. 23rd, 2008 at 12:04 AM

So, went for an interview. Er, I think I am still pretty much out of it because I wasn't interactive. =.= I am given an assignment to do, yet again. I am still wondering if I should go ahead to write the one page write up. Ever since the last disastrous job offer, which had me doing TWO assignments for them to gauge my writing skills turned out to be a fucking waste of time, I am ever wary of repeating the experience. Because ultimately I had to reject the company due to their sucky terms. Le sigh.

While I was out with a friend, I caught some weird stuff on my camera phone.

What the fuck... Talk about corny.

And kudos to Ben & Jerry's for creativity. Doubling neon green plastic dustbins as seats. That must cut down on costs!

And oh, breakfast pics! For those interested enough to see. >.<

Random Updates for Today

Today's breakfast! And yes, coffee will be a consistent part of my daily breakfast.

Massive Table-Top-Still-Shots Post

  • Aug. 12th, 2008 at 1:44 PM

I've been trying to improve my table top still shots. There's still a long way to go before I master it though, I've entirely no knack in the arrangement... What better way to start than shooting photos of my breakfasts!? ^^

Still Craving for Avocados

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 1:26 PM

I've been searching avocado recipes.

Yes, I'm still craving for avocados.

I'm thinking of making tomato and avocado salad this weekend. Can't wait to experiment. Doesn't help that Simply Breakfast has so many tantalizing photos for her avocado themed breakfasts. Wish I could take photos like that.

Dare I try frying an egg?

Simple breakfast. A slice of bread, spread on butter and add a few slices of avocados. Voila!

Sprinkle on some seasoning for taste. Add a cup of juice...

Or a cup of coffee.

Perfect start to the day.

I finally got to go to this restaurant by the side of the road at Ulu Pandan. Been passing by the place plenty of times but never got a chance to dine at the area. In celebration of mum's impending birthday, we went there last Sunday.

I apologise for the pixalised photo. It didn't look like that on my phone... Sigh, it seems like the viewty's photos can't accept much editing and zooming the camera makes the photos look horribly grainy as well.

Despite the numerous advertisements and awards proclaiming the delicious seafood treat, having a first hand experience, I'm about to trash the signboard. Definitely false advertising. I don't mind the wait that evening but the food turned out to be steeply priced and the dishes more than disappointing. Especially the chilli crab. Eargh. I will definitely not be going back there to dine again.

Some other interesting stuff.

The cover of the chopsticks teaches you how to hold a pair properly. Didn't help.

Other random pics of my niece because I think she's cute. Wahahaha.

Shokudo Shiok!

  • Jul. 21st, 2008 at 11:08 PM

I realized that there are lesser posts on fashion (fashion overload maybe?) and more posts with... just pictures. Ahaha, as they say, a picture paints a thousand words. Well, not really. I like pictures, but at this point of time when I am feeling a little burned out, writing is becoming more of an afterthought. Sad.

Anyways, some more food related stuff. [info]jc295 and I went Shokudo at Cineleisure after Hellboy II: The Golden Army... some time ago. Eargh, is disgusted with how late this post is. LOL

I can't help but think that [info]barefootlawyer will love this sesame ice cream. I mean, it has real sesame in it. Tastes authentic. It's a bit of an acquired taste though. You either like it or hate it. I used to hate "old people food" when I was young, but I've gradually learned to appreciate them as I got older. Er, maybe because I'm one of the "old people" now...? @_@

[info]jc295 ordered this humongous mango... monster thing. It was really good though you have to ensure there're at least two people sharing this dessert.

Oh, and in the process of loading these photos, I discovered many fantastic photo editing functions on Photobucket! No more editing on Photoshop before loading... At least, Photoshop can do some simple editing. As you can, I've been exploring with the functions! XD WAHAHAHA

Latest Addiction - Melon Drink

  • Jul. 18th, 2008 at 2:41 PM

Let me introduce my latest addiction: Pokka's Melon Milk drink!

I found this drink at NAFA's vending machine on the way to class and decided to try it. Immediate gratification. Okay, so maybe I'm exaggerating a bit but I'm loving the way the taste of melon is mixed with milk. The melon tastes like honeydew melon by the way. Maybe a little on the sweet side, but the drink isn't too thick.

$1 from the vending machine. I have not yet discovered it on the shelves of supermarkets or mama shops.

DeliVege

  • Jul. 4th, 2008 at 12:09 AM

I saw this restaurant in the Chinatown vicinity quite a while ago. Having the impression of having just veges for a meal is pretty yucky to me (still is), I didn't bother too much about it. [info]barefootlawyer brought me there after my second gym trial (still haven't called them about the membership...). I think the opening hours are really convenient for late diners.

Unfortunately, I'd forgotten to take a photo of the restaurant outside but the interior is apparently renovated, new modern twist replacing the drab white. It was rather intimidating at first when "vegetables are good, meat is bad" propagandic-ish writings are flaunted all over the walls. I don't care much for people telling me to eat more veges. Although, there are pretty nice photos of a man painted in the colors of different countries.

We ordered: spinach noodles (soup), chicken baked rice (fake chicken meat made of gluten of course!), and an avocado drink. Yes, I'm still mightily obsessed with avocado beverage. The best part was the little servings of appetizers.

One small plate pickled cabbage (?) tasted like very mild achar. Nice.

The other was steamed ground peanuts. I actually liked them more than the main course. >.<

I had a taste of
[info]barefootlawyer's soup. I didn't quite like it though she ate it with gusto. Never cared much for capsicum.

The baked rice I had was alright. The serving was a little too much for me.
[info]barefootlawyer noted that the fried rice tasted like pizza, I thought it was rather bland asides from the occasional piece of glutenfied gorgeousness. Cheese was the killer.

The other highlight was my avocado drink. I seriously think they didn't add white sugar or other stuff in it because it really had the freshly spewed avocado taste. Masochistically, I loved the raw creamy texture. So, the addiction to avocado continues...

All in all, I wouldn't mind returning to DeliVege to try their other dishes. Not too often though, because it's slightly pricier than the normal vegetarian stall.

Massive Food Post!

  • Jun. 15th, 2008 at 12:21 PM

This post confirms the fact that I can't seem to control my eating habits. I like eating (good food) too much and somehow these always turn out to be the fried and greasy category. Le sigh. Need to decrease body fat! Wahahaha.

Nevertheless, these photos have been accumulated over the past one to two weeks. Yes, I know. I like overindulging too. >.<

Not sure why some of the photos turned out blur. Maybe cause I didn't turn off the macro function?
